Swedish Massage is the treatment that comes to mind when most people think about massage. It is the best known type of bodywork performed today, the primary goal of Swedish Massage is to relax the entire body.
Massage is recorded as one of the earliest forms of physical therapy and was used over 3000 years ago in China, India and Greece. Its popular use in the West is largely due to Per Henrik Ling (1776 – 1839), who developed the treatment now known as Swedish massage. Ling developed his own style of massage and exercise to help fencers and gymnasts, gaining international recognition in the process. Many of his ideas have formed the foundations of the modern massage which is used today.
Swedish massage techniques include circular pressure applied by the hands and palms, firm kneading, percussion like tapping, bending and stretching. Before and during the massage, communication is openly encouraged with your therapist, so that the treatment can be tailored to your individual needs.
Swedish massage is the most common and best known type of massage in the Western World. If it’s your first time at the clinic or you don’t get massage often, Swedish is the best place to start.
